Extremly funny bug of an extremly cool game!

Ok. This article is NOT about any ilikescifi game. From time to time i feel like talking about a game i currently play. So here we go. What I am playing at the moment is Just Cause 2. I remember the first part. Well, what I remember is, that I´ve played it for about 5 minutes. It was buggy and strange - as much as I remember.

The 2nd part however is different. Very different. I mean: absolutely different. The game itself is about the same base situation: a guy has this cool grappling hook and a parachute, he can open whenever he wants. This allows A TON OF COOL GAMEPLAY possibilities! You can jump from a cliff, from a crane or only from a house whenever you want, and your parachute will open. You can drive a motorbike or fly a plane, open your parachute and you´ll have a new game situation. You can run down a cliff, acivate your grappling hook, drag yourself to a palmtree, open your parachute and.... I think you see the point. And it really works like this INGAME. Its actually fantastic. It reminds me a bit of MDK. And that reminds me, that I loved Mdk!
So what I am trying to say: Just cause might have a ton of guns in it - the main goal of this game hower is the combination of jumping, flying, driving & grappling-hook-thing actions.

Right! The headline. I have found one bug. But it´s a nice one. A funny one. A bug, the player can actually play with:

Ok it´s actually very simple. Aratatatt is a small game with decent gfx, nice sound and everything just runs fine in the project folder. This is very important caus: Hell yea, I wanna port it to the Iphone!

Yes! Hi5! The Ios exporter fiinally arrived! And clickteam made a fantastic job! At the moment I am mainly fooling around with the "Can do´s" and "Cant do´s". So Aratatatt is a perfect little game for testing speed, capability, sfx and gfx.

Maya is one fantastic 3d Tool. Motionbuilder is one even more fantastic animation tool. The combination of both makes me go crazy! Exporting, Importing, everything seems to work theoretically... well, guess if it works on my computer. I think this is the end of my little trip to motion capture files. But at least I kinda know how to handle those files now and how to put them onto a character. That´s something!

Testing The Android Exporter

I am currently testing the Android Exporter of Multimedia Fusion on a Samsung Galaxy Tab. So far it is pretty impressive how fast the tiny applications are. I´m testing mainly game related stuff (shooting, jumping, accelerometer, etc.). But all in all it´s working pretty ok! ("Wir meisseln uns jetzt gut durch!")

It seems like the oldest thing in videogames: typewriter like text. Thing is: It´s not easy made at all. Especially when you have your dialoges set up so "special" like I have done in Pitiri. This was a sht loat of work, but it´s worth it. Displaying dialogs in the typewriter style is way more easy to read and to follow - Gamedesign Tip No. 37.

Currently I am working on a Kinect Game (Hack). A small one but still - it will be a game. Actually it´s two games. One is called "1.21 Gigawatts - needless to say where this is from! - the other one is called "Them lazy unicorns". In both games the player needs to trust on his/her dexterity! Aaaand it´s all about PHYSICS. Uaaaa - if there is one BIG thing of Unity 3D, then it is it´s physic Engine. Starting to love it!

For those of you who say that money can not make you happy. Well, maybe thats true. But honestly, it can get you a lot of "rare" things just like Motivation for example. The price of the Content award did something very special to my motivation: it pushed it up to Level 2! Awesome! That (and the fact that I don´t have to worry about my income the next 3 months) is the reason why I put more effort and time into my game(s) again! So here´s a little screenshot of a 2d shooter prototype I am creating. The working title is "Aratatatt" (guess why!?)

We got some brand new graphical stuff around here! What we are doing right now is using a mix of full painted backgrounds and floors and some tiles. "Tiles!?" You might think. Well, i just call it tiles. What I am doing is taking the single parts I get from Dominik, and putting them together in new forms and objects. Thats how the SPACEHABITATS or the DARK CELLAR have been created! Its a lot of morework, but its worth it, and I can do a little graphical job too.

You might remember the "RainKing" area. For the game went in some very different directions since that time, and for the engine was rebuilt very often, this old area needs to be rebuilt too. What I can take is the physics platforms (the invisible environment of the game). The rest needs to be created and coded again. Well...should be done in a day or two (i hope).

Working on new habitat

For I need a little graphical - work - pause of my all time favorite math - filled - save - engine problem, I am working on a new space habitat. It will be twice as big as the "main" one and will have some very fine jump n run elements in it. The good thing: I can use a lot of stuff of the old habitat and some other levels. So let´s cut out old stuff and create a new world!

Solved - again!

I have solved an old problem, that I thought I have solved already. Hmm now I dont know if this is/was a bug of the Mmf2 or if I´ve never really solved this (But I am actually pretty sure that it worked). The problem was the frame - switch. Player comes from the right - go to frame x // Player comes from left - go to frame y. This simple think is not really working fine with my physics bodies. So I found a little trick (with a second placeholder of the character). Well... Most important: It works now!

...sometimes it´s really hard to keep myself motivated. There is no end in sight for that damn "save/load" engine. Slowly I realize, that I am not a programmer. Math is something.....well, let´s say it: stupid! Math is STUPIIIIIID!!!!!

The most complex thing so far is the save - engine (is it called like this? i don´t know...but it fits). What needs to be saved is the number of upgrades the player has discovered, if those upgrades HAVE been discovered, the location, the level, the length of the health bar, the ... You see, its pretty a lot of factors I have to cope with. Yea, it was fun in the beginning, when suddenly something works, but now, that I have to think of ALL those numbers at once, its - well its frightening, honestly!

Resizing

I once said: for every bug you solve, you´ll find 10 more somewhere else. The same with problems. The same with graphical issues. Since i use the very nice PHILTERS, I have to resize the whole character (sometimes pixel for pixel). It´s strange, but there is only one real size for the char. Its instinctively wrong if the Character is not of this one size. Its hard do describe, but I have to solve this problem, even if it´s really shitload of work and a dumb work too.

3 frames finished

Ok, as you might know, 3 frames are playable. But those 3 frames include only the rough gameplay and one npc. What I am working on now are real levels, with jump riddles, physic riddles and maybe an enemy (but only maybe).

The setting will be changed too. There will be an open world, but not as i wanted it in the beginning. This Super metroid kinda world would be way too complex for this game. So I´ve devided the world into little pieces, which will work fine as single levels ( I hope).

Beside this all we have some tiny "production" problems (...its all about....). So while I am solving this problem, I am working more on the concept side of Pitiri.

The small things

It is strange, but it is nothing new. The game was lagging. The thing was: only when the player was moving right aka. was holding the right arrow key. The lag came every now and then (all 6 seconds somehow)and my first thought (and the first one of pretty everyone in the fantastic daily click and martin 2k forums )was: ahhh of course the graphics.
No way. I tried around a couple of hours...debugging...testing every little inch of my game: no bug in the graphics or anything common.

Second thought: theh player movemnts. Of course! I thought. When the player is moving right...it MUST be somewhere there! A couple of hours later: guess what!? No bug there (at least not this one!!).

Then i was lucky or better I used the "Holzhammer Taktik". I deletet one group after another and checked out what happened. Long story short: This MASTER OF BUGS was a combination of a not working "OR" function and a sound problem!!! Sound!? Hä!? I dont think of it any longer. It works now and just like I wrote a couple of weeks ago: some things you just can not understand!

Ok. I got some pretty nice facts about what should be changed, different or added to the game. But before I start adding new stuff or making some old stuff better, I have to debug the game. Line by line, bit by bit I am working the the core of some buggy game content. Hard work, but it´s worth it in the end (I hope).

Its done. The Demo version of Pitiri is ready to be tested. I´m gonna put up a download sometime in the future. The demo includes 3 Levels (frames) and all the abilities of the main character. Here are some screenshots:

This sounds a a bit like a star...BetaDemo...doesn´t it!? Well, It will take me one more night, but then I will release the first Demo of Pitiri. Well, at least it will be finished.
Ah...and I did not realize it, but - looking at my last post and the mistakes in it (thx benji :) - my lifestyle in the last few weeks were ABSOLUTELY NOT HEALTHY AT ALL. Way to go!

Alpha Blending and other real life problems

Ok so here is how it is (again): There are some fantastic shaders for Multimedia Fusion 2 (for HWA). The problem is, as far as you use em for static objects they work fine, if you are using them on moving, dynamic objects, the "Pc geht in die Knie" - means, that the grafics are creating lags (even tiny little grafix like i have posted below). So unfortunately, for I am using loads of dynamic objects, i can not use those shaders for those objects. But the people behind HWA made a great job with the FIRST shaders (the old clickteam shaders). So I will try my best with those. The more simple, the better (again).

Pretty small for someone, who makes so much trouble, ey!?

I´m not the best coder around here. To be honest, I can not code very good...I just find my way. But what I know is, that the more logical the better (concerning a good code). Thats what I´ve heard, thats what I´ve learned and that is what every good software developer would tell you. But MAN...sometimes, there just IS no logic. This is the "I DONT KNOW WHICH NUMBER IT IS" time I have no idea how the things work I have just written. And guess what...of course it is about this:

Working on a new trailer
